Northern Aura

This film tells the story of the deep bond between a remarkable musher, and her rehomed sled dogs. For various reasons, these sled dogs had no future in the tourism business, but through Betty's dedication, they were given a second chance. Finally, being back in the wilderness, finding peace, and becoming one with nature and her dogs - that's what this film is about.

About the Protagonist

Betty Maly
profession: dog trainer, canine physiotherapist
passion: musher
Betty is a young German woman who emigrated to Finland 8 years ago to follow her calling. She worked in various husky kennels and turned her profession into a passion. Betty has rehomed five huskies from a kennel and gave them a new home because they didn't fit in well with the tourism business. Just like us humans, dogs have special needs. Some need a little more safety, others more freedom. All of them need a lot of love. Some of her dogs were given to her because they were claimed to be aggressive, and some, for example, didn’t have the mental strength to be working dogs. She made it her goal to give these misunderstood dogs a perspective.

About Mushing

Mushing can be quite a competitive sport, where it’s all about being the fastest on the finish line at a race. It requires a lot of thought about the breeding and, of course, the right training and feeding. But not all sled dogs are made for this idea of perfection. For Betty, it's more fulfilling to concentrate on the dogs’ individual character and what is important: being outdoors with them, in nature, completely independent, as a team.

My Personal
Commitment

Markus Brandl
Visual Creator & Creative Producer at CAPAVY
'Each of us has a unique story to tell. For the past two years, I've followed my inner voice to discover real stories. Untold life stories that unfold quietly in the shadows, unnoticed, day after day. And so I set out to discover people, accompany them, and visualize their stories. Betty's story is one of them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people and supporters who contributed to making this film project a reality. This film is not just a documentary portrait; it also allows me to take another step forward on my personal journey of giving a voice to unseen people.'
